New Year's Eve: pictures of the night nobody remembers
Between the fondue and the fireworks the best pictures of the year happen. And on 2 January they vanish into fourteen camera rolls.

New Year's Eve is the night with the most photos and the worst yield. Everybody shoots, nobody collects, and on 2 January the pictures sit in fourteen camera rolls, of which exactly three make it into a group chat.
Yet it is the occasion where a shared gallery takes the least effort, because everyone has their phone in hand all evening anyway.
What makes New Year's Eve different
- The evening has three parts. The long dinner, the hour before midnight, the outdoors afterwards. The pictures from part three are the best and the blurriest.
- It is dark. Phone cameras produce astonishing results with fireworks, in both directions. Which is exactly why collecting pays: among thirty firework pictures there are two good ones, but never from the same guest.
- The turn of the year. At 00:03 everyone is in the same mood, and it is the one moment of the year when a group photo happens by itself.
- People join. Neighbours, friends of friends, somebody from the party next door. Exactly the people who share no group chat with you, and whom a gallery without accounts still reaches.
The task list that fits this night
Photo tasks work better on New Year's Eve than on any other evening, because there is a lot of waiting: between the fondue and midnight, not much happens. Five that have proven themselves:
- Your plate, just before you start
- The table at eleven, chaos allowed
- Your fortune-telling attempt, whatever form it takes
- A picture of the sky, however it turns out
- The first photo of the new year
The last one matters most: it produces exactly one timestamp nobody can reconstruct later, and it turns the competition into a shared moment instead of a race.
The screen in the living room
If there is a TV in the room, put the gallery on it. On New Year's Eve that works even better than at a wedding, because the evening is long and people get bored in between: a picture appearing on the TV two minutes after upload produces the next five.
One note for the midnight hour: videos play muted on the wall. That is an advantage on this particular night.
On 1 January
Do nothing. The second wave comes anyway. New Year's pictures are uploaded late, often only when somebody goes through their camera roll in the afternoon. Send the link round again on 2 January and download the ZIP once nothing new arrives.
