From a group chat to a gallery
The group was quick to set up and useless after two days. How to move without losing the pictures already in it.

The group "Wedding Photos 📸" has 63 members, 400 messages and nowhere near 400 pictures. It was set up in two minutes and it is the reason you are reading this.
What goes wrong
- The pictures get shrunk. What arrives in a group chat is a copy sized for screens. You cannot print that any more, and you find out at the photo book stage.
- They get mixed with chatter. Between two pictures sit seven messages about parking. In six months nobody scrolls through that.
- It is a chat, not an album. You cannot sort by task or guest, cannot hide anything and cannot download the lot.
- Everybody sees everybody's number. 63 phone numbers the guests did not give each other.
And the point you only notice after the party: whoever is not in the group gets nothing, the aunt without WhatsApp, the colleague who left at some point.
Moving in three steps
- Create the gallery and send the link into the group. Do not dissolve the group. It is the channel that reaches people. That is exactly what the ready-made message next to every gallery is for: link plus one sentence of explanation.
- Ask once for the original. "Please upload your pictures here so they are included in full quality". That is the argument that works, because everybody understands it.
- Upload the group's pictures yourself. What is already in there can only be salvaged in the small version. Upload it anyway: as the host you can do that at any time, and a small picture beats no picture.
What you gain
Full resolution, because nothing is compressed. Videos that are not cut off after thirty seconds. A place the guests without a messenger can reach too. The gallery needs no account, no app and no phone number. And a ZIP with everything at the end, instead of four hundred taps on "save image".
As a side effect, the problem every group has by day three disappears: nobody has to mute it to stop getting a notification for every picture.
When the group stays anyway
For arranging things. "Who is bringing grandma", "we are ten minutes late". That is what a chat is for and a gallery is not. The two things just should not be the same window.
A good rhythm: the group for the day, the gallery for what should last. And a week after the party you send the gallery link into the group once more. That is when the latecomers upload.
