Guests without smartphones: the 80th birthday

An 80th birthday starts from a different place than a wedding: half the room is over seventy, two have a feature phone, one says "me and the internet, that will not work", and the grandchildren are all at the same table. It is still often the party with the loveliest pictures. You just have to collect them somewhere else.

The good news first

There is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for. No account, no password, no app from a store that first wants an Apple password nobody remembers. Whoever scans the code or taps the link is in the gallery, and whoever only wants to look has to do nothing at all.

With this audience that is not comfort, it is the condition. Every app install halves participation, every account halves it again.

The help-desk method

What reliably works at family parties: a grandchild or a niece officially takes the job for half an hour. Not "call me if you need help", because nobody does, but going from table to table once and, for everyone who wants it, scanning the code and uploading the first picture. After that they manage alone.

One round in the afternoon usually covers the whole evening.

For the ones it still will not work for

• The short link. Under every QR code there is a short address to type, without confusable characters, printed in groups of four. For everyone whose camera app does not recognise codes.
• Somebody else's phone, your own name. No smartphone but pictures on a camera: just ask somebody. Whoever uploads enters their name first, so you can upload uncle Werner's pictures without them ending up under the wrong name.
• Add paper photos later. As the host you can add pictures at any time, weeks later too, including photographed prints from the album. The upload window ends for guests, not for you.

What to leave out

An access code: with this audience an extra hurdle for very little gain. Whoever has the link was invited.

Photo tasks: they can be wonderful, but keep the list short and make the first task the easiest. "The view from your seat" is good. "A selfie with three generations" produces two pictures and a lot of confusion.

And the leaderboard, which is off by default here anyway, I would leave off. A competition that part of the room cannot technically win is no fun.

What counts in the end

The person whose birthday it is does not want a link at the end, they want something to hold. Download the complete ZIP and make a photo book or prints from it. The files in it are the originals at full resolution, not the screen version from the gallery. That is the moment all the collecting pays off.
