The spoken guest book: voices last longer than sentences
Written entries get short, spoken ones get honest. What a voice guest book gives you, where it fails, and how you keep the recordings.

The classic guest book has a problem everybody knows and nobody says out loud: it sits on a table, there is a pen next to it, and 80 per cent of what goes in reads "All the best for your journey together!" Not because guests have nothing to say, but because writing happens under observation. Somebody is already waiting behind you.
Speaking is different. Thirty seconds talking into a phone usually produces something only that person could have said.
What you actually get
Short recordings, mostly between twenty seconds and two minutes. Often with background noise: glasses, music, laughter from another table. That sounds like a flaw while recording and is the most valuable thing about the file years later. The room is in it.
And you get voices. That is the real point. A written sentence ages like a card; a voice does not age. For people who are no longer there later, that is the difference between a memory and a recording.
How to make sure it gets used
- Ask a question, do not ask for "a few words". "How do you know each other?" or "What do you wish for the two of them?" produces answers. "Say something" produces throat-clearing.
- Point out a quiet corner. Next to the dance floor, nobody records anything anyone will understand later. An armchair in the side room with a small sign is enough.
- Name a length. "Half a minute" removes the fear of having to prepare something long.
- Have somebody start. The first example sets the tone. If the best man goes first it turns funny; if the grandmother starts it turns serious. Either is fine, but it does not happen by accident.
An entry is written or spoken
Not both. Whoever types, types; whoever speaks, speaks. That keeps the entries clean and the decision small. Nobody should have to wonder whether they ought to add a written note as well.
Technically, every recording is converted into a format every device can play the moment it is uploaded. That is not a detail, it is the reason it works at all: Android phones and iPhones record in different formats, and without that conversion half the room could not listen to what the other half left behind.
Where the recordings end up
In your archive. The complete ZIP, which you can download at any time and receive automatically at the end of the runtime, carries the voice messages in a folder of their own, together with every photo and video in original quality.
They are deliberately not part of the guests' bulk download. "Download all photos" means photos; a guest book entry was addressed to you, not to all eighty people in the room.
Deleting works at any time, for the hosts and for the guest who left the message. The audio file goes with the entry.
